Woof. It's been a year.

After my first year of blogging, I was delighted by the prospect of posting for another year. This year, I'm not sure that sentiment still stands. Don't get me wrong – I still have plenty of programming topics that I want to write about, and I have plenty of unfinished drafts that I'd love to eventually complete and publish too – but the effort to have a new high-quality article ready-to-go every week is prohibitive. And at the rate I'm going, I'm not sure I can preserve both the quality and volume of these posts. Something's gotta give.

Looking back, this year's posts have steered away from language-specific content and instead leaned more towards general programming concepts, personal pet peeves, and how-to instructions to resolve particular problems that I've run into. I've actually reviewed several posts in order to "re-solve" some of the recurring issues that've cropped up, and that's been a source of personal pride. Since this kind of content has been inspiring for me to write, it's easier to produce, and I think I'll continue down the same path going forward.

Additionally, for the language-specific posts, I've discovered that most of that content was produced when trying to solve small "problems" that had little real-world impact and not from actual problems that I might've solved at work. In fact, Advent of Code is the primary inspiration behind my December posts every year. I like writing these posts too and will continue to do so.

So it would seem that I'm not seriously considering changing the quality of my posts. In which case, I may need to think hard about the volume I'm outputting. Does posting weekly still make sense?

Honestly, I don't know, but it's hard to think about posting less often. I'm not ready to reduce the frequency just yet. Not without increasing the quality or length of my posts first.

So then, what should I do? Maybe these aren't my only two options. I've had a growing interest in writing about personal finance topics, so what if I expanded the scope of this blog to include finance too? I'm sure there are numerous intersections between code and money just dying to be explored. And I already got a start by writing about Social Security benefits a few months ago. This seems promising, but I'm not as hopeful as I was last year.

I may not be sure if I'll be able to complete another year's worth of material, but I'm definitely not ready to stop blogging cold turkey just yet. I guess we'll just have to see how 2023 goes.
